Alton Hardin has done it again! He is my "go to" poker teacher - I have a library of his books and I have bought all of his poker video courses. I studied poker for 2 years through various means but ended up with a muddled head - a lack of "putting it all together". Alton has straightened all of that out, and my moving from a losing player to a consistent session winning player has shown me his teachings work. I am no pro - just a recreational player wanting to enjoy the game more and Alton has given me the tools and confidence to progress.I am a student of his first Poker Math book and the companion video course. Alton has taken the Essential Poker Math to a whole new level with this Expanded Edition. This edition is much more robust - elaborating on the basic concepts then adding the more advanced concepts. All subjects are explained thoroughly for student comprehension. The many hand examples and many practice hands bridge academia with practical implementation. The chapters include specifics on how to properly evaluate draws, steals, 3bets, set-mining, etc.Alton does include the impact of player types and folds that in appropriately. But he avoids what I find in so many poker educational materials - saying "just be aggressive against fish". This book puts context to the many dimensions of poker.Alton transcends textbook learning by taking that next step to instilling HOW to apply the math as you play. That is unique and VERY important. He makes Poker Math practical to apply. You leave a chapter having a real game plan to institute.Make no mistake - Poker Math is important to becoming a more accomplished player. Intuition may have its role at the table but base that in proven mathematical concepts. This book serves the live player as well as the online player - I am both.As with any poker teaching you need to focus and concentrate and learn what is presented - if you "study" the book properly, and don't treat it as "just a read", you will reap rewards.I can not recommend this book any higher, and all of Alton Hardin's other poker educational materials as well.

I've played poker for more than a decade, and already felt like I had a good handle on basic probabilities, odds, and basic poker math. But this book was a great, fast read that opened my eyes to thinking about the game from a much different perspective, making concepts like equity, expected value, and implied odds much more easy to understand and apply at the table. Hardin's writing is clear and to the point, with excellent examples in each chapter to illustrate the concepts that he is explaining. I breezed through this book within a week and took a lot away from it. I was skeptical that I needed more math in my poker toolkit, but Hardin convinced me otherwise. Fantastic book...

Of course I haven't seen them all but I'd wager this is the best Poker Math book on the market by any author at any price. Alton Hardin has a gift for simplifying and boring head spinning formulas. I've read a couple other Poker Math books by some famous Poker authorsbut this is the best one. In most poker books the author tries to show how smart he is, this one will show you how smart "YOU" are. Bonus points: The author is easy to get a hold of and likes to answer reader questions.

The Expanded Edition of Essential Poker Math builds upon Alton Hardin's first Essential Poker Math book. The book presents the math in poker in a down to earth commons sense language that even I understand. As anyone knows poker is not only about the cards dealt but also the percentages and odds that a certain hand will hit or hold up on the boards. This book explains all of this extremely well. If you are a student of the game of poker I suggest you get this book. Read it, study it, and then apply the math on the felt. You will walk away with more cash just as I have.

I am already half way through this book and I must say that it is well written and easy to follow. So far I haven't found any material that I nor any of my friends would disagree with. I recommend buying the paperback copy and using a pen to fill in with your own notes. Great hand analysis and the chapters on implied odds and +-EV are priceless. Will post an update after finishing

I'm just starting to dive into poker. I knew there was a lot involved, but this book showed me that there is a lot more than I thought!Alton does a great job of easily explaining key concepts that will immediately help you become profitable in the long run. Understanding equity, pot odds, and expected value were my favorite chapters. Even the small amount of time he spent of player types has already improved my game.I also checked out his Poker 101 Course playlist on YouTube which was a good review of what I read in the book.I chose this as my first poker book in order to get better at poker because of the reviews, along side The Theory Of Poker by David Sklansky and I'm glad I did!

I've been playing poker for a little while, mostly for fun.As a mathematics major in college, I knew the basic idea of pot odds, and rule or 2,4.Pros: Alton does a great job at making this book an easy ready.Easy read does not imply that the content itself is superficial. He gives you the tools and a few examples of how to apply the concepts. For a beginner who wants to take the game a bit more serious, this is a great book.Cons: Not very many cons when you keep in mind the scope of the book.He does not go into a lot of theory, but again, that is not the intention of this book.Overall - if you have a very basic understanding of poker mathematics, do yourself a favor and read this book. You will finish it in a week, and have a better grasp of the concepts.Since it is an easy read, one-up yourself and read it twice so it sticks.

Already has paid for itself. Just knowing what the odds of hitting a straight or flush after the flop are and if your getting the right pot odds to call is worth the price. It's still gambling but at least you know when your getting a fair shake.
