Penelope Keith's PBS "Hidden Villages" is a TV road trip following a 1930's Batsford Guide to quaint villages. We got hooked. It's one of the best shows on TV.Here is a Batsford update to accompany the superb series. It's the best show for several reasons not the least of which is that my wife and I have B&B'd in several of the Batsford Guide's villages over the years. The opportunity to revisit these amazing places and more has been just to tantalizing. We've expanded our "next trip" must-see list to regions we've not visited.I pre-ordered this edition as a gift for my wife. The first thing you notice here is the Batsford Guide's use of the familiar block-print style cover art. This edition is a modern pictography and narrative of the original Hidden Villages and more. It's a beautiful quality book more than adequate.You simply can't keep your hands off it. More than expected. If you enjoy British village vacations, here's the place to chart your next whimsy.
A well written book that has little to do with the Penelope Keith series of the same name. Clare Gogerty wrote the descriptions with help from older Batsford guide books. The illustrations by Brian Cook are an Arts & Crafts delight. Gogerty gives a brief history of how Cook's watercolors came to be. There are 11 areas discussed, but wouldn't a map have helped even those who live in England? A map would help in better planning a trip - go here and there because they are close to one another. Like every guide book, this one needs another and a map to make village touring a reality.
Nice book following the Penelope Keith TV show. Great photos, very nice quality, although, 4 pages needed to be cut apart that must have slipped through the printing process. This is NOT the original book she uses as a reference for the show.
I've always wanted to visit the villages of England and some day I will, but in the meantime I can do some armchair traveling in this lovely book.
My husband got this book for me after we watched a show about the Batsford travel books, with Brian Cook’s illustrations. The woman, Penelope...sorry can’t remember her last name, is a well known actress in England and she was using it to recreate the trips described. It made me want to do that as well! Beautiful art work!
