"Her best work yet, assured, supple, exhilarating in its nerve and cool momentum" --Joan Didion"A stunning novel...a powerful story that cuts back and forth in time to give us both the defining moment in a woman's life and an understanding of how that moment has reverberated through the remainder of her days...Her evocation of her heroine's passion for Harris Arden is so convincing, her depiction of the world she inhabits is so fiercely observed...The difference between [Monkeys and Evening] attests to Susan Minot's growing ambition and assurance as an artist" --Michiko Kakutani, New York Times"An absorbing drama...Minot writes with quiet perceptiveness and grace, pulling thereader into Ann's deathbed reverie" --Elle"A brilliant lyric performance" --John Casey"In spare and lovely language, Susan Minot has set forth a real life, in all its particularity and splendor and pain. This is the task of the novelist, and in Evening Minot has succeededadmirably" --Roxana Robinson, New York Times Book Review"It astounds in its craftsmanship and imprints itself indelibly on the heart...A haunting work of art that moves at the pace of a suspense thriller" --Sheila Bosworth, New Orleans Times-Picayune"Evening is a beautifully realized work...more mature and confident than anything she has written...An exquisite novel" --Gail Caldwell, Boston Globe"A wonderful, truthful, heartbreaking book. . .. From the Inside Flap

With two novels and one short story collection published to overwhelming critical acclaim ("Monkeys takes your breath away," said Anne Tyler; "heartbreaking, exhilarating," raved the "New York Times Book Review), Susan Minot has emerged as one of the most gifted writers in America, praised for her ability to strike at powerful emotional truths in language that is sensual and commanding, mesmerizing in its vitality and intelligence. Now, with Evening, she gives us her most ambitious novel, a work of surpassing beauty. During a summer weekend on the coast of Maine, at the wedding of her best friend, Ann Grant fell in love. She was twenty-five. Forty years later--after three marriages and five children--Ann Lord finds herself in the dim claustrophobia of illness, careening between lucidity and delirium and only vaguely conscious of the friends and family parading by her bedside, when the memory of that weekend returns to her with the clarity and intensity of a fever-dream. Evening unfolds in the rushlight of that memory, as Ann relives those three vivid days on the New England coast, with motorboats buzzing and bands playing in the night, and the devastating tragedy that followed a spectacular wedding. Here, in the surge of hope and possibility that coursed through her at twenty-five--in a singular time of complete surrender--Ann discovers the highest point of her life. Superbly written and miraculously uplifting, Evening is a stirring exploration of time and memory, of love's transcendence and of its failure to transcend--a rich testament to the depths of grief and passion, and a stunning achievement.

In 1955 Ann Grant attends the wedding of her best friend in Maine. During that fateful weekend she falls in love with a young doctor from Chicago. Fate works her magic and they consummate their love within hours of meeting each other. Forty-eight hours later the doctor's fiancee arrives and tells her betrothed that she is carrying his child. He is torn between his love for Ann and his duty to his intended. Now at the end of her life Ann Grant Lord lies in her bed. She is dying from cancer and each day the pain gets worse. Her children from her three marriages gather round and keep a death vigil while Ann mentally slips back in time to that weekend in 1955 when she fell in love. Her memories of that weekend become mixed with memories of her three marriages and with the hallucinations brought on by the heavy pain medicines she is taking. This is an interesting book; highly imaginative in the way that it is written. The reader is taken on a roller-coaster ride through the mind of a dying woman who mentally reviews her life and still wonders what if she had married her young Chicago doctor. Throughout the narrative she is speaking to a male entity - it is never clear if that person is at her bedside in substance or only in spirit. We are led to believe that it is her young beau from 1955. She relives that fateful weekend in great detail although the memories are mixed with memories of other men (her three husbands) and other places she has been. Her children are the buzzards circling her deathbed. Nurse Brown is the voice of reason who writes her reports on her patient in a clinical manner that is much needed after the ramblings of the elderly Ann.For me this book gave insight into the final days and hours of a person who has accepted her fate, knows she is about to die, and embraces the end. Everything else is secondary. A thought-provoking story that I finished in under a week.

Having seen the movie, I was excited to read the book which - as always - was better. I was surprised and pleased that the movie did such a good job of portraying the book, and delighted by the additional information supplied in the book. A nice read. And oddly haunting.

I watch the movie made from this book and and it intrigued me so I bought. If it's anything like the movie I hope anyone with children will realize that their mothers had a "life" before they ever came along and that their mother was a very different person than they knew as their mother. That their Mother once was a young starry eyed person in love at one time too. Older women I think would enjoy this book and relate to it and their children would learn something from reading it. . I loved it.

Read Evening a long time ago and just bought this copy for a friend. Amazing tale of friendship and mother daughter relationships but the beauty is in how Minot captures memories... just the way they come to us, in wisps of colors, images, scents....

Minot is an excellent writer but this novel, an audacious experiment framed as a stream of consciousness narrative told from the protangonists death bed is confusing and unreadable. I put it down after a few chapters. If you want to experience the author in her full glory read Monkeys instead.

Book weaves back and forth from woman dying to get memories from a weekend forty years before. Strange that at the end of a full life she would have such vivid memories of a weekend wedding and the love affair that lasted such a short time.

I loved this book. I read it slowly to savor all the nuances. I underlined things, I talked about it to my children, and it made me see my own mothers' death in a different way.

I am not a reader of romances, but was enticed into reading "Evening" when I heard it referred to in the publicity for the movie as "that beloved classic." I couldn't believe there was a classic I hadn't read so I got the book. First of all, I should point out that the movie and the book have only one thing in common: A title! The book is written with the run-on sentence structure that Virginia Woolf made so popular, but also accurately reflects how someone whose mind is muddled by pain killers might think. The writing is so beautiful and expressive that I actually have two paragraphs from the book as a screen saver on my computer. This is a great book for discussion groups with questions like "what if?" and "how do secrets effect family dynamics?"and "How often do people let a dream eclipse reality thereby sabotaging thier lives?" This book is not for someone looking for a pulp romance or a storyline for the movie. It's much more.
