In this book, Claire Howell Major does exactly what she sets out to do: synthesize a large body of research into a single resource that includes both theory and actionable steps for creating thoughtful and engaging online courses. She covers the classroom space itself, but also faculty attitudes toward online teaching as well as things like intellectual property and student rights-- both of which are changing with the increased popularity of online teaching.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going to be teaching online or studying digital pedagogy. As a graduate student with a limited budget, I think this is definitely worth the $26 or so dollars it costs.

Too much inconsequential research with too little to say.

Dr. Major provides an excellent and thorough synthesis of the research and evidence from practice about the latest developments pertaining to online teaching. Dr. Major discusses many important issues that faculty should consider as they teach on-line. Her book is rich with profiles of actual practice from a wide variety of faculty who use different types of innovative technologies in their courses. This book is an outstanding resource for faculty who currently teach blended or online courses and for faculty intending to teach online for the first time.

An excellent overview of the research and advice related to online education. If you understand the basics of online education and are really looking to delve more into how to teach online and how to support those teaching online- this is a great read!
